An archaeologist and scholar of contemporary history, Serge Dewel holds a PhD in history (INALCO). As an associate researcher at CESSMA (Paris, UMR 245), he taught the history and geopolitics of Ethiopia and the history of East Africa at INALCO (2018–2025).
He heads the Ethiopia Department at the ICO (Paris), where he leads the seminar on “The Geopolitics of Religion in the Horn of Africa”.
His research focuses on the processes of historical rewriting that have been underway in Ethiopia since the late 20th century (Historiography), as well as on the role of Christians in the Horn of Africa. Particular attention is paid to heritage, memory and the construction of identity, as well as the use of graphic sources in history (ancient photographs, maps, etc.).
He authored several books related to the History of Ethiopia, including "Éthiopie, une histoire: Vingt siècles de construction nationale" (2021) and "Géopolitique de l'Éthiopie, centre de gravité de la Corne de l'Afrique" (2026).
