The reasons for the cautious attitude towards ecumenism in some circles of the UGCC
FIHAS Roman, « The reasons for the cautious attitude towards ecumenism in some circles of the UGCC », 2021.
Abstract
This article examines the reasons behind the lukewarm attitude towards ecumenism among certain clergy and lay members of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC). Particular attention is given to the factors contributing to the formation and persistence of stereotypes and prejudices that hinder ecumenical openness. By identifying these challenges, the article seeks to highlight areas requiring further theological reflection, pastoral formation, and practical engagement. Drawing on Pope John Paul II’s vision of ecumenism as an essential dimension of the Church’s mission, expressed in Ut Unum Sint, the article emphasises the need for a deeper reception of ecumenical principles within the UGCC and a transformation of attitudes towards Christian unity.
